Description

Set in the Barbican Estate, overlooking Thomas More Garden, this superb one-bedroom flat is a modernist's dream and feels a million miles away from the city.

Brickworks Say - It's not every day you can move into a piece of London's architectural history, but this home offers just that opportunity. The Barbican Estate is perhaps the most well-known example of Brutalist architecture in the UK; a sprawling complex of concrete and glass juxtaposed with the natural beauty of the landscaped gardens. Once inside, the commotion of city life feels a world away.

Set on the first floor, the flat enjoys uninterrupted views of the Thomas More Garden, the largest green space on the Estate, framed through the picture window in the living room. As you would expect, modernist principles are at the fore, with open-plan interiors, pared-back design, and large windows creating an intimate relationship with the outside environment.

The owners have made sympathetic updates. The new kitchen, in keeping with the original design, is bespoke and made by Thomson Brothers (with Miele appliances and quartz worktops). The cool white and greys compliment the neutral tones throughout. But the interior design isn't simply visually appealing; it's shaped by function, with dining and living spaces that flow into one another, abundant storage and underfloor heating.

Bold, futuristic, and heritage-listed, the Barbican Estate deserves all the respect it has earned. But it's not just a London landmark; it's a multipurpose arts venue and cultural destination, with a conservatory full of foliage and botanical escapism right in the heart of the Capital. If you ever tire of the art and music, lake walks, and restaurants on the Estate (and why would you?), your local neighbourhoods –– Shoreditch, Islington, Clerkenwell and the City –– include a wealth of museums, markets and gastronomic treasures waiting to be explored.

The Owners Say - Moving to the Barbican Estate was the best decision we've ever made. Living in central London, with its world-class culture, entertainment and restaurants within walking distance, is a real privilege. And, of course, the commute is a source of envy. For us, London is a 15-minute city.

Looking out at the private residents' gardens from Thomas More House, it's easy to forget that you're in central London. The Barbican Estate is surprisingly quiet. It's almost a village in the middle of the City. We've enjoyed many slow afternoons with a bottle of wine in the gardens and strolls around the lake.

Residents are friendly and truly care about the Estate, and we have made great friends over the last few years. Although the time has come for us to move home, we have no plans to leave the Barbican Estate. We couldn't imagine living anywhere else.
