Description

Originally featuring a traditional thatch, the roof was latterly replaced by more practical pan tiles which wonderfully complement the pretty painted elevations of the cottage. Internally the property has been sympathetically and stylishly renovated by our current owners, who have taken great care to retain as much of its original period characteristics and atmosphere and yet modernise the accommodation to suit family life.

Arranged over three principal floors the accommodation is not only versatile but also offers excellent income potential from its top floor which has been a successful Air B&B business for a number of years, and even featured on BBC1 & BBC2’s My Unique B&B.

On the ground floor there is an impressive sitting room with the most inspiring inglenook fireplace complete with bread oven. There are exposed timber beams, and a window seat. This truly Jacobean theme continues throughout the house with quirky detail at near every turn. The kitchen is another warmly atmospheric room continuing with the theme of flagstone flooring and exposed beams, fitted with a range of traditional country style kitchen units there is space for a breakfast/dining table, provision for a range style cooker and a fabulous pantry space. Beyond the kitchen is a handy utility room which leads in turn out to a pretty courtyard garden.

To the rear of the ground floor a mesmerising winding staircase with an ancient wooden tread continues onto the first floor, which with its uneven floors and walls evokes a feeling of being on board a 16th Century Galleon, a vessel from which some of the original building materials used in the construction of the house may well have originated. On the first floor are two superb double bedrooms which are packed with character including wide elm floorboards, timber beams and stone mullion windows and a charming family bathroom complete with a clawfoot bath, wash hand basin and W.C.

Continuing onto the top floor, another beguiling wooden staircase passes by what is thought to be a centuries old priest hole. The first of two top floor bedrooms is a charming room with exposed beams, under croft storage and fitted bookshelves which remarkably hide within them a secret door leading through to the second bedroom and the chic re-fitted shower room with its retro metro-styled tiles. These three rooms combine to create the B & B rental rooms that were previously mentioned.

Outside, the property has a small but perfectly formed courtyard garden, with painted and exposed stone walls to three elevations, that not only give it superb privacy, especially for the cedar-sided hot-tub, but also an enchanting backdrop.

Situation

Situated with good access to local amenities and surrounded by beautiful countryside, Wrington ( is the jewel in the crown of the Wrington Vale and one of the most sought-after villages in North Somerset. Picturesque with a lengthy and interesting history, it benefits from facilities usually reserved for a larger town, including two pubs (one with an excellent restaurant), church and a chapel, a primary school (awarded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted), post office, public transport, garage, pharmacy, dentist, coffee shop, grocery shop, off licence/convenience shop and even two florist/gift shops (one in the village centre and one on the outskirts). Secondary schooling is available at nearby Churchill Academy and Sixth Form Centre ( also recently awarded 'Outstanding' by Ofsted (with transport for local children provided daily), and which also benefits from a modern sport complex open to the general public. Further schools, both state and private, are at Bristol, Backwell, Wraxall and the Chew Valley. The area around is well known for its beauty and offers a variety of community pursuits. Indeed, riding, walking, fishing, sailing and dry skiing are just some of the activities available within a few miles. The village itself is within commuting distance of Bristol and the seaside town of Weston-super-Mare and there is access to the motorway network at Clevedon (junction 20) and St. Georges (junction 21). There is an international airport at Lulsgate and a mainline railway station at Yatton.

Our vendor says... We have loved living in this unique, historical home and loathe to leave it but we have always felt custodians of Cross Cottage, passing through its walls and treasuring our time here. Our daughter has gone to university and we now want more freedom to travel.  Cross Cottage has been a very social home which has also earned its own keep, with plenty of space to entertain family and friends. Its lovely thick walls keep this ancient home quietly insulated from noise as well as cosy in winter and cool in summer. It is the epicentre of a beautiful village with a lovely community.

We have noticed... It would be difficult to find a more captivating property than ‘Cross Cottage’, from the minute you arrive at the front door and stoop to enter the enchanting hallway, you are transported back to bygone times and get a real sense of the history and importance of this beautiful house. However, don’t be fooled, yes, it is a house that displays more original character than you might find at a National Trust stately home, but it also has a warmth and charm that can be very difficult to replicate.
